Education of the Philosopher
Postman and Weingartner suggest that true education in our schools requires "achieving a high degree of freedom from the intellectual and social constraints of one's tribe." (p. 4) While this is the job of the "philosophers" in our society, as John Locke calls them, most men are not suited to this level of inquiry. Education should provide this to those students who are capable of this philosophic thinking, but education should be providing the others with a solid foundation of truth so that they may live their lives according to these principles and be a healthy part of society.
